About the Medical Council of Canada Qualifying Examination (MCCQE) Part I

As of April 2025, the MCCQE Part I is being modernized to improve candidate experience and testing efficiency. The revised format will:

  • Be shortened in overall length, with no more than 3 hours of testing before a scheduled break‍
  • Remove the Clinical Decision-Making (CDM) section, previously composed of 38 cases
  • Continue to assess critical knowledge and clinical reasoning entirely through Multiple-Choice Questions (MCQs)‍
  • Divide MCQs into two sections to improve exam pacing
  • Allow more time per question to support fairness and accessibility

The exam will be offered up to four times per year, over approximately 100 testing days, through Prometric centers and remote proctoring. The MCCQE Part I continues to assess the core competencies outlined in the MCC Objectives and aligned with CanMEDS roles.
